Chimpanzees are humans' closest genetic relatives, sharing 96%-98% of our DNA. An estimated 1,000 chimpanzees are currently held in U.S. laboratories, of which approximately half are federally owned or supported. The Great Ape Protection Act (H.R. 1326) will end invasive research on all great apes, end federal funding for such research anywhere in the world and, retire all federally owned chimpanzees into permanent sanctuary.

The time has come for the United States to join the moral and humane community of scientifically advanced countries like the United Kingdom, Austria, Japan, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Sweden, and the Balearic Islands that have banned or limited the use of chimpanzees in research.

We, the undersigned members of the scientific and academic community, support efforts to end the use of chimpanzees for biomedical research and testing in the U.S. and to provide them permanent retirement in sanctuary.
